Every BIG person in this book dared to dream and chose to act. That is the essence of the BIG journey – dreams to action. Those who embark on the journey discover untapped potential and reserves to push ahead, and they reap extraordinary rewards. But the journey is challenging. There are many obstacles. BIG people embrace the challenges and don’t allow the obstacles to block their vision. In his best-selling book The Last Lecture, Randy Pausch describes this mindset: “The brick walls are there for a reason. Right? The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough.”
If you dare to dream, and choose to act, you can be BIG. We want to help you. That is our challenge and commitment to you.
Where do you want to go on your BIG journey? What’s holding you back? Many of you can answer the first question clearly; and although you anticipate challenges, you don’t expect them to hold you back. The walls are there, but you plan to devise innovative ways around them. But for others, the walls are blocking your vision. You’re not sure where you want to go. But you know precisely what’s holding you back. Maybe there’s too little money. Maybe there are too few hours in the day. Maybe the everyday demands of life are keeping you from starting your BIG journey.
Our challenge to you is this: Pretend the walls have crumbled. Before you concern yourself with all of the forces that could hold you back, you should first imagine where you want to go. Define your dreams and imagine yourself when they come true. Once you have the destination clearly in mind, then you can face the challenges of how to get there. If you focus first on all the reasons you can’t get there, you’ll never really know what there could be. The walls will always stand in your way and block your vision.
If the walls were gone, if you had the time, if money were no object, if success were guaranteed, what would you do with your life? Grab a notepad and a pencil, and jot down your thoughts. Don’t worry about money. Don’t worry about time. Don’t think about who will walk the dog or write the sales report or mow the lawn. Just dream.
