Who are the bigger heroes: Baseball all-stars or no-names who do BIG Things?

A lot of big businesses have launched initiatives to encourage and celebrate BIG (bold, innovative, and generous) people or organizations. Pepsi has it’s Refresh Project. Chase has the Community Giving program. American Express has the Members Project®.

My favorite is People Magazine’s All-Star’s Among Us. I tuned in to tonight’s all-star game to see Albert Pujols, Derek Jeter and the other ballplayers; I wanted to see the BIG all-stars who are helping to change the world. People runs an annual promotion, inviting people to nominate people in their communities who are making a difference. The magazine narrows the list to 90 finalists, three for each of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams. Online voters (1.7 million votes were cast this year) select the 30 winners.

Several of them were introduced during pre-game ceremonies. BIG inspiration! They’re all listed on this page, with links to more detailed profiles.

So as the blogosphere goes nuts over where LeBron James will play basketball, and as sports writers and fans call great athletes “heroes,” I thank People for reinforcing what we’ve been saying for a while: BIG people are the true heroes, the real All-Stars Among Us!

We’re celebrating BIG people on this site with our BIG Across America Program. If you know people who are BIG, who deserve all-star recognition, please share their stories with us.

BIG ACROSS AMERICA

Bold, innovative and generous people are in every corner of America. We want to find them, celebrate them, and connect them with you. In the next few weeks and months, we plan to connect with BIG people in every congressional district in America.

If you know people who are BIG, please share their stories with us.
